Conversation with the Little Man

Today we were at a friend’s house and the kids were all playing in the back yard, having a great time. I must have called Owen “baby” which I tend to do and have done since he was little. He will always be my baby right? Well, I say I must have because I didn’t even realize I had, but I heard him say to his friend, “my mom calls me baby, but I’m not a baby. I’m a big boy.” I heard that and I realized he might not like the term I find so endearing, so I asked him if he liked it when I called him baby and he said no. Sigh... My little man is growing up and now I am embarrassing him in front of his friends.

Soccer

We have officially started our first season of soccer! And Owen could not be more excited about playing. Two of his other little friends are on the team, which is really fun! We  have had 2 practices and 1 game so far and our next game is on Saturday. It is really fun to watch him learn and play!

Austin, Texas

My sister, Kristen lives with her family in Austin Texas, and we decided to take a road trip (that’s right...we drove) to visit them and check out their neck of the woods. We loved visiting them and letting the kids play. We loved Austin and seeing all of their favorite spots and eating at all of their favorite restaurants. Kristen and Mark are excellent hosts and tour guides and we had a great time.

I thought it might be fun to share a few pictures (when I remembered to pull out my camera...I am not awesome at remembering...) of our trip. We drove out Saturday morning. It took us about 15 hours to get there. I was surprised and delighted at how well my kids did in the car for that long. We drove it all in one day.

A few of our Favorite Things we did in Austin:

*Playing with cousins. This was by far the best part: seeing the kids play together. They have an endless supply of light sabers at their house as well as a trampoline and a swing set. My kids were in absolute heaven. There is even a little neighborhood park in walking distance. (Kristen lives in a really cute neighborhood). It was really fun to let the kids run and play.

*Zilker Park: This is THE park in downtown Austin and it has a train that takes you around the park. That was a huge hit. We packed up a picnic lunch and took the kids to the park to play and ride the train.

*Rudy’s: we went there to experience Texas BBQ. I wish I had taken pictures of this place. You can sit in the “back yard” of the restaurant where they have picnic tables set up and a huge yard for kids to run and play. This might be the absolute perfect place to eat for parents who have young children. Also, to Nate’s absolute delight Texas is Dr. Pepper country so you can find it EVERYWHERE.

*Treats: we had the best treats. Kristen took us to a really cute candy shop that has every conceivable candy, even the stuff I used to buy at the corner store across from my Grandma’s house in Canada! It was fun and we bought the kids some lego candy. We also sampled ice cream from Amy’s and cupcakes from Hey Cupcake! Both very yummy. Nothing can outdo the treat we made though. Kristen taught me how to make caramel and chocolate dipped pretzels. I, once intimidated by the caramel making process, learned how and Kristen made it look really easy. We let the kids decorate a few pretzels with sprinkles and they turned out really cute. Kristen is great at coming up with really creative and fun ideas for the little guys.
We also tried the pioneer woman’s cinnamon rolls. I think we halved the recipe and came out with 3 dozen and they are amazing!

*San Antonio: We went about an hour and a half south to San Antonio and stayed the night at the most fun hotel ever. We took turns with Kristen and Mark going to the temple, we played at the really cool water park that was part of our hotel, we went to see the Alamo, and the River Walk in San Antonio. Our kids fell asleep within seconds when we started back on the road to Austin that night. We wore them out (always my daily goal).

*Hadley: We were able to meet the new addition to the Hilton family, Hadley Jane. :) She is perfect, no really, PERFECT. She smiles and sleeps and eats and wears the cutest clothes. It was fun to watch how Olivia reacted to her.

*Games: We learned a fun new card game called “May I?” that was really fun and when we had energy and time after our fun days and getting kids to bed, we were able to play a few times.

So those are just a few of the highlights and if you haven’t gone out to Austin to visit the Hilton’s you are just plain missing out because it is FUN! :) Thanks Kristen, Mark and kiddos for a fabulous trip!

Reading Books

The other day I was cleaning and getting ready for our trip, I could hear Owen reading books to Olivia. I peeked in to see and couldn’t resist, so I grabbed my camera in time to snap a few shots of them sitting together reading books.
